VIDEO: Hydrogen-powered, ‘flying’ superyacht concept

Italian design studio, Lazzarini has revealed its latest design concept Plectrum, a 74-metre (242ft) foiling ‘flying’ superyacht.

The hull shape is said to take its design inspiration from the latest America’s Cup sail boats, but instead of ‘being pushed from the wind’, the Plectrum is powered by three hydrogen motors capable of 5,000hp each.

The designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini says Plectrum is conceived to be entirely composed of dry carbon fibre composite, with an estimated top speed of 75 knots.

The hydrofoil technology is envisioned with an adjustable beam of up to 20-metres that can be reduced to 15-metres when the yacht is berthed or at anchor.

The yacht’s living spaces are split across four decks, with the main body offering six guest cabins and an owner’s suite.

This is not the company’s first foray into groundbreaking designs – in January 2022, Lazzarini unveiled a 150m helium-powered flying superyacht concept named Air Yacht.
