The Cal 2-46 is unique in her place among the 20 finest cruising designs. The raised center salon cabin allows 270 degree views through large Plexiglas-portlights. Beneath the raised salon cabin are two (2) soles that sandwich between them the two fuel tanks and two water tanks. Because of the sub-sole no tanks sit upon a damp bilge or against the fiberglass hull and ample ventilation from the engine room maintains a dry environment for this space. The bulkheads are fully glassed to the hull and the hull has two massive longitudinal stringers to prevent hull flexing (think aircraft). The main mast is thru-stepped to an aluminum base that is set upon floors. Where it passes through the cabin top there is a massive aluminum beam built into the cabin top that spreads load across the cabin top and to the hull. Shoal draft keel with a wide flat bottom allows this vessel to sit flat on a tidal grid. With 12 foot 6 inch beam and 5 foot draft the boat can be transported by truck with only wide load permits.

A center cockpit design with raised salon cabin makes this vessel very similar to today's "deck salon" designs. You can sit at a raised settee and table while enjoying easy views of your surroundings. Very large spaces below decks allow for an aft cabin spacious enough to have been partially converted to an office while still maintaining a double berth. Generous sized head and storage. The passageway forward from that cabin has standing headroom and a good sized nav-station to starboard. The center engine room is like a small garage with work bench and vise. Stepping up to the raised salon the "L" shaped galley is to starboard. Settee and table to port allow for window level seating. A Dickinson Alaska diesel stove heats the cabin. Forward and down is a head to starboard. Lots of storage and hanging locker to port with a spacious V-berth cabin forward. The raised salon cabin has ample storage under the seating and under the floors. The current owners live aboard and travel the Northwest waters four months per year with only one dry goods provisioning due to the huge amount of storage spaces.

Broker's Comments

This Bill Lapworth-designed Cal 2-46 has been a sought-after and well respected ocean going yacht since the early 70’s. At least two of these yachts have participated and completed the Jimmy Cornell sponsored “Around the World Regatta”. Strong, safe and fast, the boat is easily sailed or motored. The “Deck Salon” styling of this center cockpit motor sailor was well ahead of its time, today being a much admired feature of sailing yachts with spacious cabins and great visibility. This Northwest example has been cruised full time four months of each year since the early 2000s. It’s clean, well-maintained and has all the equipment you will need for your own extended voyages.
